In the inverting amplifier, the signal is applied to the minus (−) input. The plus ( ) input is kept at ground. Because of negative feedback, the op-amp forces the − input to stay near 0 V. When the input goes positive, the output must go negative to balance the circuit. That is why the output waveform is flipped. The size of the output depends only on the resistor ratio
