Twenty-five years ago this week, Mount Pinatubo began erupting. The sequence began with a series of plinian ash columns, like the one on June 13, 1991, culminating with the catastrophic eruption on June 15. USGS scientists Rick Hoblitt, John Ewert, Tom Murray and Dave Harlow were monitoring the volcano, along with colleagues from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
